Founded in 1965, South Shore Community Action Council, Inc. (SSCAC) is a 501(c)(3) private, non-profit community action agency with a mission to eliminate poverty on the South Shore of Massachusetts by collaborating with community partners to provide everyone in need with opportunities so they can live with dignity and participate in our communities to the fullest extent of their capabilities. SSCAC's current programs include:

Home Energy Assistance: Keeping low-income households warm in winter by paying heating bills, securing discounts on utility bills, and accessing energy conservation programs.

Energy Conservation: Energy programs that increase home heating/cooling efficiency and decrease utility costs for low-income households.

Transportation: Elderly and people with disabilities receive door-to-door transportation in handicap-accessible vehicles to/from medical appointments, adult day programs, and other human service destinations.

South Shore Early Education: Infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school age children receive comprehensive early education and care, daily meals/snacks, health and developmental screening, and more.

Food Resources Program: Fighting hunger and food insecurity through collection, storage, and distribution of a half million pounds of fresh and non-perishable emergency food with targeted distribution for seniors and children.

Emergency Assistance: Case management, information/referrals, and emergency financial assistance with rent, mortgage, utilities, food, and/or basic household necessities.

South Shore Family Network: Community-based family and parenting support activities, including early literacy and STEM parent-child playgroups and parenting workshops.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance: IRS-certified volunteers prepare and electronically file state and federal income tax returns on behalf of low-income taxpayers at no charge.

Consumer Aid: Free mediation and information to resolve consumer complaints.

SSCAC's service area encompasses approximately 80 communities on the South Shore, South Coast, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. In addition to its main administrative and program office in Plymouth, SSCAC operates 6 Early Education centers on the South Shore and Cape Cod and 2 intake offices for its Home Energy Assistance Program (Plymouth, Hyannis).
