Dripping Springs, TX
07/10/2024 03:35 PM

DRIPPING SPRINGS, TEXAS – July 8, 2024 – After years of hard work, fundraising, and volunteerism by the residents of Dripping Springs, the Dorian Zev Kweller Memorial Skatepark is officially opening this month. The grand opening will be held on July 27th, 2024, at 9:30am at the City of Dripping Springs’ Founders Memorial Park.

Here are the activities planned for the grand opening:

• Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony: Join the festivities at 9:30 at Founders Memorial Park, which kicks off with the official ribbon-cutting of the Dorian Zev Kweller Memorial Skatepark.

• Competitions and Contests: Stay from 10:00-Noon, for competitions and contests open to all ages, with prizes for the best tricks and performances.

• Open to All: At noon, it’s officially open for all to enjoy, open daily from dawn to dusk.

The Dorian Zev Kweller Memorial Skatepark, or "The DZK" as local skaters call it, was created through the efforts of Drip SB (Formerly DS Skatepark, Inc.), a non-profit created to raise funds, work with skatepark designers, and build a regional skatepark at the north end of Founders Memorial Park. When unveiled this month, it will be a 10,000 square foot, plaza-style skatepark designed to provide a facility for young people to pursue an athletic activity that they love, as well as provide a safe place for young people to develop active lifestyles.

The skatepark was made possible through fundraising as well as the approval by the City of Dripping Springs to authorize the skatepark be constructed in Founders Memorial Park, and the approval of $624,250 in Hays County park bond funds given to the Dripping Springs Community Foundation to use in construction of the skatepark. The skatepark was one of the recommended projects to be funded by the Hays County park bond that passed in 2020.

The Skatepark was named the Dorian Zev Kweller Memorial Skatepark in August of 2023. Dorian was a junior at Dripping Springs High School when he passed away in a car accident in February 2023. He was a beloved member of the local skateboarding community.

The skatepark aims to foster a sense of community by offering a vibrant space for skaters to practice, compete, and connect. It is expected to attract visitors from across the region, contributing to local tourism and economic growth. Additionally, the skatepark will host regular events, competitions, and educational programs, encouraging youth engagement and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle.
