Harrisburg, PA (February 7, 2025) – Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of South-Central PA is celebrating the invaluable role mentoring plays in empowering youth and fostering stronger communities.

BBBS of South-Central PA Program Coordinator Lindsey Baumer visited Susquenita High School and surprised Senior Alize Reyes during chemistry class. Reyes was nominated by BBBS of South-Central PA staff in January as part of the organization’s National Mentoring Month volunteer recognition campaign. Baumer collaborated with Susquenita School District staff to organize the surprise.

Reyes volunteers with BBBS of South-Central PA as a High School Big, spending time each month mentoring a younger student.

Baumer shares, "Alize has been consistently meeting with her Little Sister, Arelys, since her sophomore year of high school, helping her Little build confidence and explore new interests. The two have formed a close bond. When we ask Arelys about her Big Sister, her face always lights up. We are so grateful for Alize and all of our Bigs at Susquenita for taking time out of their hectic schedules to make a positive impact."

Baumer presented Reyes with a certificate and a small gift; a set of coloring books for the next time she visits her Little.

BBBS of South-Central PA has facilitated the High School Bigs program in school districts throughout their service area for over 30 years. This program connects high school students with elementary and middle school youth, fostering leadership skills for the more senior students while providing essential support and guidance to younger peers. 62 Susquenita High School students are volunteering as mentors during the 2024/25 school year.
