LTU launching interdisciplinary Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence

SOUTHFIELD—Explosive growth in the use of artificial intelligence technologies in a wide variety of industries, such as automotive, healthcare, retail, finance, science and manufacturing, has led Lawrence Technological University (LTU) to create a new degree, the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI). AI and big data are now being successfully used in the battle against the pandemic by providing solutions to tracking, predicting, contact tracing, early diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19.

The new program will be a joint effort between of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in LTU’s College of Engineering (CoE), and the Department of Mathematics and
Computer Science (MCS) in the LTU’s College of Arts and Sciences (CoAS). This interdisciplinary program will continue LTU’s success within the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“The MSAI program will join the fundamental computer science concept of artificial intelligence with applications that mimic human intelligence such as describing and recognizing qualities, as well as understanding of meanings in different contexts in robotics, connected vehicles, data science and cybersecurity,” said Tarek Sobh, LTU provost.

The program will also leverage new and reengineered laboratories in LTU’s Taubman Engineering, Life Sciences, and Architecture complex. The Industry 4.0 Connected Enterprise Facility will include the use of the Robotics Engineering Automation Lab (REAL) on the second floor of the Taubman complex, and the Electrical and Computer Engineering for Embedded Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ECE-ESAI) Lab on the first floor of the complex.

Entry to the program will begin in the 2021 Fall semester. A bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field is required for entry.

According to the human resources firm Talentseer, demand for AI talent has grown by 74 percent annually over the past four years, with annual salaries approaching $200,000.
