ABOUT THE SEDALIA AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Sedalia Area Chamber of Commerce has over 300 members, representing several thousand employees. The Sedalia Chamber is committed to its mission of developing, promoting, and facilitating an environment in which area businesses can grow and prosper along with our community. It does this by providing a broad array of valuable services including networking opportunities, community engagement, legislative advocacy and political action, information resources, and events and programs. POSITION SUMMARY

The Executive Director must be a dynamic, passionate, and strategic leader who can continue the established vitality, relevance, and impact of the Chamber. They are responsible for the overall leadership and management of the organization and will be accountable for its effective and efficient operations including financial management. The Executive Director will have a strong external focus, serving as a key spokesperson and advocate for the business community and will be able to successfully operate at very high levels of influence with key government and business leaders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Business and Operation Plans: Responsible for the development and execution of all business, financial, marketing, and operational plans to achieve the Chamber’s strategic initiatives. Oversees a continual evaluation of the business and community environment, adjusting plans as needed, measuring progress toward attainment, providing resources where needed, and working with staff and volunteers to achieve plan goals. Ensures compliance with all labor, tax, and other government regulations.

Financial Management: Develops and effectively manages an annual budget that is aligned to the strategic goals of the Chamber. Ensures financial soundness, stability, transparency, and a balanced budget. Monitors organization’s financial performance for trends and provides the Board of Directors guidance in determining the best courses of action for the organization’s financial health.

Strategic Direction: In conjunction with the Board of Directors, determines, refines, and implements the short-term and long-range strategic objectives of the Chamber. Works collaboratively with the Board of Directors to implement the organization’s mission, vision, goals, and strategic plan and regularly reports on key performance indicators.

Board Relations: Builds and maintains strong relationships and open communications with the Board of Directors. Maximizes and leverages Board relationships and engages Board members in Chamber activities. Maintains regular communications, collaborates, and provides counsel to the Board and committees regarding policies, programs, and other key initiatives. Plans and organizes the monthly meetings.

Membership Relations, Development, & Retention: Provides leadership in membership services to ensure there is a compelling value proposition for current and prospective members. Along with the Chamber board, reviews membership needs and satisfaction, as well as develops and recommends enhancements to increase membership value, engagement, and financial support.

Events & Programs: Responsible for managing the operations of programs and events conducted by the Chamber, including the Annual Awards Banquet, Piccadilly Event and Christmas Parade. Works with staff and Chamber committees to plan, market, recruit participants, develop content, conduct the events, monitor finances, and evaluate the effectiveness of the programs.

Community Leadership: Serves as a community leader, visionary, and alliance builder to help ensure a vibrant economic environment and high quality of life for both employers and their employees from companies and organizations of all sizes. Serves as the principal spokesperson for the Chamber with the goal of continually enhancing the overall brand and image of the Chamber and its contributions to a thriving community. This position also plays an important role in continuing to develop a positive relationship with Whiteman Air Force Base and participate in the Military Affairs Committee and Base Community Council.

Advocacy: Collaborates with the Board of Directors and staff to identify and manage the Chamber’s relationships and ensure strong, effective representation with elected officials and government bodies to achieve desired outcomes. Monitors state and local legislation and communicates its impact to the business community. Collaborates successfully with other organizations, individuals, and groups in advocating for a pro-business agenda.

Talent Management: Responsible for all Human Resources functions including but not limited to the hiring, supervision, evaluation, and termination of all staff. Develops future leaders for the Chamber and manages a highly effective and efficient organization as measured by achievement of priority goals, membership satisfaction and growth, revenue generation to support priorities, and quality programs and initiatives. Provides leadership to maintain an organizational culture of excellence, respect, diversity, and collaboration among teams and individuals.

Requirements

CORE COMPETENCIES & QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have a unique combination of personal and professional qualities, including: ·

  • 5+ years executive level leadership experience for a business or nonprofit organization, with preference for someone who understands the dynamics of a chamber of commerce or similar membership organization that advocates for members and engages in economic development.
  • Proven business acumen and ability to successfully manage budgets, set goals and objectives, and plan and track multiple, simultaneous projects.
  • Possess strong mental agility, capable of looking at the big picture, absorbing information quickly, thinking broadly and strategically, analyzing thoroughly, and acting decisively.
  • Willingness to pursue new ideas and challenge traditional thinking.
  • Experience working for and with a Board of Directors, including Board development and engagement.
  • A diplomat with strong relationship building skills and political savvy.
  • A consensus builder with a successful track record for engaging and building alliances with a wide range of constituencies and influencers that includes business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, elected officials, and the media.
  • A stellar communicator, with superior communication and presentation abilities derived from strong listening, written, and verbal skills.
  • Proven experience recruiting, developing, motivating, and retaining a strong, diverse staff in a team-oriented, results-focused environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 office suite and QuickBooks online. Proficiency with Canva, CRMs, and other digital business tools a plus.
  • Education in business, communications, or public administration is a plus.
  • Professional certifications and continuing education, particularly Chamber-specific, are also desirable.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The Executive Director shall generally be available during regular operating hours of the Sedalia Chamber (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday). The Executive Director may have flexibility with their schedule provided that they complete all duties, responsibilities, and management functions of the job description in a timely manner. The work environment is dictated by the activities of the Chamber which may include times outside of regular operating hours including mornings, evenings, and occasional weekend days. The Executive Director must possess a valid driver's license and live in Sedalia.

The physical demands of this position require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Near vision is required to write and read printed materials and computer screens. Requires hearing and speaking to exchange information on the telephone or in person. The employee is regularly required to reach with their hands and arms and lift items weighing up to 40 lbs. Requires sufficient arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate a keyboard and other office equipment. Repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers may also be required. Additionally, the employee must communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. Finally, have openness and adaptability to change and work under regular to moderate stress levels.
