Visit McMinnville, the City of McMinnville’s contract destination marketing and management organization, seeks a tourism stakeholder to join the Board of Directors. This is a volunteer position.

In our search to fill the upcoming board vacancy, we especially welcome candidates with a background in finance and/or with executive management experience to strengthen the diverse skillsets and expertise represented among current members.

Fellow Board Members, City Council, Community

POSITION SUMMARY
Visit McMinnville board members serve as volunteer leaders of the City of McMinnville’s contract destination marketing and management organization. The Board is ultimately responsible for the success of the organization and ultimately accountable for the stewardship of approximately $1.2M of public funds annually. Members represent Visit McMinnville and the broader tourism industry in the local community and throughout the state. Those who serve in this capacity accept significant public responsibility and commit to constantly uphold Visit McMinnville’s reputation as Oregon’s most effective and highly functioning destination marketing organization.

This is a governing board—setting policy, providing strategic direction, and communicating Visit McMinnville’s work to community leadership and stakeholders. We work in unison on behalf of the entire board, adopting the majority position and supporting the majority objective, setting aside personal opinions or special interests.

Board composition includes:
• Two members-at-large
• 5-7 tourism industry representatives
• One City Councilor
• One City staff person
• The President/CEO

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
The board of directors is responsible for managing the President/CEO, working collaboratively with their fellow board members, steering the budget and strategy of the organization, and overseeing the implementation of the annual business plan.

The board meets monthly for 2 hours and members are asked to review meeting documents prior. Relevant committee assignments may further extend obligations. Expect a time commitment of 3-5 hours a month to adequately fulfill these responsibilities.

MINIMUM REQUIRED SKILLS
- Excellence in leadership
- Highly collaborative
- Strategic thinker
- Financial acumen (or related business experience) in order to properly review financial statements - Ability to act on behalf of the entire tourism industry
- Ability to adopt and support the majority position of the board following thorough discussion - Ability to stay informed and engaged in the VM process
- Love of community and strong desire to strengthen the local economy through tourism

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Work to uphold Visit McMinnville’s vision, mission, and values (referenced below) in all we do.

2. Creating the governing policies of Visit McMinnville and ensuring those policies are implemented by the President/CEO. Primary policies include, but are not limited to:
• Bylaws
• Contract with City of McMinnville
• Financial policies and procedures
• Strategic plan
• Public meeting adherence

3. Attend board meetings.

4. Hire, supervise, and evaluate the President/CEO and hold them accountable for quality work, a positive culture, and achievement of organizational objectives.

5. Proactively and enthusiastically engage in the Visit McMinnville process.

6. Help navigate the political landscape surrounding Visit McMinnville and McMinnville’s tourism industry. Cultivate and maintain rapport on behalf of Visit McMinnville with:
• elected officials
• community leaders
• business leaders
• tourism stakeholders

7. Be thoroughly familiar with Visit McMinnville’s bylaws, contract with the City of McMinnville, financial policies and procedures, and business plan.

8. Provide review and oversight of Visit McMinnville’s monthly financial reports.

9. Commit and contribute to a positive culture of excellence.

10. Commit to working as part of a cohesive board that respects different opinions but aligns with the majority following the conclusion of discussion.
