The Bowlus Fine Arts and Cultural Center enhances the life of the regional community by nurturing a love of the arts; generating cultural and economic vitality; and providing spaces to experience and create educational, entertaining, and innovative live performances.

HISTORY
During his final illness in 1960, Iola citizen and banker Thomas H. Bowlus wrote a will directing that his estate be used to build and equip a fine arts center. The mission of the center is defined in the will as ''to broaden the cultural background of area youth and make available to the citizens of the area facilities, programs and entertainments not otherwise available.''

The Center opened its doors in the fall of 1964, with Kansas City Mayor, H. Roe Bartle as the featured speaker at the grand opening and dedication. A few weeks later the Kansas City Philharmonic performed the first major concert in the new auditorium. Since its opening, the Bowlus Center has become an organization of regional significance and a sought after venue for touring artists.

The Order of the Elks was formally organized on February 16, 1868 in the City of New York NY. The four cardinal virtues of our members are: Charity-Justice-Brotherly Love-and Fidelity. Today there are more than 1.1 million members in more than 2,100 lodges nationwide and the Elks is one of the largest and most active fraternal organizations in the United States. The Order of the Elks is a benevolent organization, not a social or business club.  It is dedicated to service to our communities, to its members and our Country. Whether it be with the fortunate or unfortunate youths; care of the needy, Veterans Services, promoting of Americanisn or other benevolent activities, we offer you a wide variety of choices in which to choose your passion or offer your skills.

The Order of the Elks is also an organization of American citizens who love their country and desire to preserve its cherished institutions; who love their fellow man and seek to promote his well being, and who love the joyousness of life and endevavor to contribute to it, as well as to share it with fellow members offering welfare, enhanced happiness and to quicken the spirit of American patriotism while cultivating good fellowship.

The Order questions no man's religion, nor bars him on account of his creed. It is not concerned with one's political afflications, and it does not permit either religion or politics to be injected into, or have any effect upon its faternal deliberations, national or local.  It lures no man to its doors by any promised material benefits which might appeal to his self interest. It pledges no support to the furtherance of personal ambitions.

The Mildred Store is a unique treasure as a Grocery Store, Music Venue and RV park.

We offer grocery store items, a meat market, deli meats and sandwiches (including the famous Charlie Brown Sandwich), cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, and special candies and deli trays for holidays, parties, and family gatherings.

Once a month, we host a free block party in downtown Mildred, with live music and family entertainment, with store and deli open late to serve the community.

The Mildred Store also owns and operates the Lazy Daz RV Park which is situated in a quiet country community. Our quaint RV Park offers 8 hook ups with water, electric and sewer along with a  picnic area with tables and grills available to renters (upon request).

We are keeping the Mildred community alive.
                             -Regena and Loren Lance

HISTORY
During the days of prosperity in Mildred, KS, the Brown Brothers store opened in 1915. The store was then passed down through three generations, eventually changing its name to Charlie Brown's Grocery in the mid 1940's, and was in operation for nearly 100 years.

In 2014, Charlie Brown's Grocery had closed its doors, leaving the community of Mildred to travel 10 minutes to the nearest grocery store. Seeing an opportunity to fill a great need in her community, Regena Lance, along with her husband Loren, decided to purchase the store soon after its closing and work towards restoring it to it's former glory.

Regena and Loren take great pride in what they have done to keep this grocery store alive with outside of the box thinking.

The Piqua State Bank was organized in 1910 by L. C. Neimann. During that same year the Farmers State Bank was opened in Piqua by George Wille. In 1914, the Wille family purchased the Piqua State Bank and merged the two banks under the name of the Piqua State Bank. John Wille, George Willis's son, owned and managed the bank for the next 50 years.

The Bank was eventually purchased by Galen L. (Jack) Curry following his retirement from the Army. The Curry family has owned and operated the bank to this day. The bank is now the only locally owned locally operated bank in Woodson and Allen counties. Several Curry family members are employed by the bank and the bank continues to grow and prosper.

It is the mission of the Piqua State Bank to maintain the safety of the depositor's money, maximize profits for the stockholders, and have a positive impact on the community.
