Lubeznik Center for the Arts Hosts October First Friday with Two New Exhibitions

Lubeznik Center for the Arts (LCA) will host its October First Friday for the opening of two new exhibitions by local artists, Makayla Brooks and Yuna Choi’s two-person exhibition and Joan Spohrer’s solo show, on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022, from 5 to 8 p.m.

“Color as Form and Feeling," the joint exhibit by Brooks and Choi explores abstract art. Both Brooks and Choi are seniors at Indiana University Northwest majoring in fine arts with a focus on painting. Brooks is from Lake Station, Ind. and is minoring in art history and philosophy, which greatly influences her art, characterized by bright colors and spatial experimentation. Choi is from Seoul, South Korea and has a passion to express shapes and marks that come from within, instead of replicating a picture or an object that exists in the physical world.

Choi said, “We are not the same, but we are harmonious together,” when discussing the combined exhibition.

Spohrer’s exhibition, “Coast to Coast,” is comprised of artwork inspired by her travels. She began painting after a career as a magazine editor and freelancer. Out of curiosity and a strong desire to paint, she enrolled in an artists’ workshop in 2002. Through the years, she has shown and won awards at many exhibits and art fairs. She works in watercolor and acrylic, creating landscapes, figures and florals in an impressionistic style. Recently, she has delved into digital painting. She is a member of Area Artists Association.

All are welcome to enjoy the exhibitions, complimentary light refreshments and a cash bar. As always, admission is free.

“We look forward to presenting art by our local community in the NIPSCO Education Studios. I hope our audience will come and support the artists!” said Janet Bloch, the executive director at LCA.

In addition, First Friday attendees can view “moniquemeloche presents…”, LCA’s blockbuster exhibition on display until on October 21. The exhibit showcases an international roster of emerging artists working in all media represented by Monique Meloche Gallery in Chicago. The gallery’s program has been diverse and inclusive since its inception and aims to be a trailblazer for artistic talents early or under-recognized in their careers.
