After last year’s successful “Pedal Power 200” race at the Troy Traffic Jam, organizers have partnered up with Troy Recreation, Troy Fire Department, and Troy Police Department to offer exciting new pedal car races this summer! Families will get more bang for their buck as kids can race in up to three events spread over June, July, and August. Mark your calendars for June 15th, July 13th, and August 4th and get those pedal cars ready!
Each race will be part of an
exciting, FREE family friendly summer event here in Troy. Race in one, or race
in them all!
While each course will be slightly different, the registration, check-in, and races will be run the same with 3–4-year-old, 5–6-year-old, and 7–8-year-old age groups. There is a small race fee, and racers will need to provide their own pedal-powered vehicle, a bike helmet or similar, and be ready to pedal themselves to the finish line when the horn blows!
“Last year we saw a fantastic mix of classic pedal cars, modern pedal cars, and even a custom-built pedal car! I was thrilled to see families coming together for this new tradition and I hope they continue to tinker in the garage together,” said race sponsor Mark Lieberman of Nostalgic Motoring, Ltd.
First up will be the “Troy Trucking 200” at the Troy Touch a Truck event on Saturday, June 15th. The Troy Fire Department, Police Department, and Department of Public Works will fill Boulan Park (3671 Crooks Rd, Troy) with trucks and activities free to families from 10am-3pm. Pits open at 10:00am and racers will line up at 1:30pm for a 2:00pm start. Registration is $10 per racer and each participant receives a medal and sweet treat. Trophies will go to the first-place winner in each age group. Last year’s Touch a Truck event drew thousands of visitors, and the “Troy Trucking 200” will be sure to cap off a fun day at Boulan Park!
In July the “Pedal Troy 200” will be part of Troy Recreation’s new Troy Midsummer Bash event. This free drop-in event on Saturday, July 13th from 12pm-3pm at Jeanne Stine Park (parking at the Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois Rd, Troy) will be full of bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painting, and more! Pits open at 12:00pm and race lineup will be at 1:30pm for a 2:00pm start. Registration is $10 per racer and each participant receives a medal and sweet treat. Trophies will go to the first-place winner in each age group. The new Troy Midsummer Bash featuring the “Pedal Troy 200” will quickly become a favorite community event at Jeanne Stine Park.
The “Pedal Power 200” at the August 4th Troy Traffic Jam will be this summer’s pedal car grand finale! Starting at 10am, the Troy Traffic Jam at the Columbia Center (201 W Big Beaver, Troy) will have 300 antiques, classic cars, hot rods, and exotic vehicles with special 60th anniversary Mustang and GTO Corrals. Families will also enjoy robotics demonstrations from local FIRST Robotics teams, live music, and lunch for purchase. In its 16th year, the Troy Traffic Jam has become a much-anticipated festival of cars that draws 6,000 visitors from across Troy and southeast Michigan. Racers in the “Pedal Power 200” will want to drop their pedal cars in the pit, enjoy the show, and then get ready for a 1:30pm race. The $15 race fee includes a t-shirt, medal, sweet treat, and chance to win a trophy for a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place finish in each category.
For an added level of fun, this
year the Troy Fire Department and Troy Police Department will have racers
competing in each of the three Pedal Car Races in Troy.
“The Troy Police Department is excited to showcase our new Troy PD Pedal Car. We have no doubts our Police Car will outrace that big red truck from the Troy Fire Department,” said Troy Community Services Sgt. Ben Hancock.
"The Troy Fire Department is excited to be part of this wonderful event, working alongside the Troy Police Department to engage with our community. The friendly rivalry between our departments adds an extra layer of excitement and showcases our shared commitment to public service. We look forward to seeing everyone there and may the best team win!” replied Troy Fire Lt. Keith Young.
