Troy Historic Village will be open to the
public for free on Tuesday, June 7 from 5-8pm. This all-ages evening event
features the sounds of America’s musical past played by the Dodworth Saxhorn
Band. Guests may tour the historic buildings and gardens and bring a picnic
blanket to spread out on the Village green. Food and beverages will be
available for purchase from Notch’yo Nachos, AAA Ice Cream Carts, and Biggby
Coffee.
Based in Ann Arbor, the Dodworth Saxhorn Band is
known across the state for performing mid-19th century American music on
authentic brass and percussion instruments made in the 1800s. The arrangements they play are specially
tailored for 19th century brass band arrangements set to a different pitch than
contemporary instruments, making the band a perfect match for the Village’s
idyllic green on an early summer evening.
“Evenings at the Village are beautiful and
evenings with music at the Village are magical,” says Executive Director Jen
Peters.
Peters
also points out that June 7 is a special day in Troy’s history: “It was on June
7, 1955, that the citizens of Troy Township went to the polls and voted to make
Troy a city. The Village commemorated that date last year by celebrating the
Grand Opening of the 1837 Niles-Barnard House and wanted to continue using the
day for community celebrations.”
Community
partners from Stage Nature Center, Troy Recreation Department, Troy Public
Library, and the City of Troy will have information and giveaways for visitors,
plus a sneak peek at local summer happenings, which include the Troy Farmers
Market on Fridays, and a series of Summer Concerts and Music Under the Stars.
Troy
Community Affairs Director Cindy Stewart notes that “there are so many things
to do this summer right here in Troy for all ages, all interests, and all
activity levels. There is definitely something for everyone in Troy!”
The
Troy Garden Club will sell tickets to its annual July Garden Walk, and the
Newcomer’s Club will share the year-round activities it offers to connect
neighbors. Troy Fire Department, Police Department, and the City Clerk’s Office
have important safety and voting information to share with the community. Troy
Historical Society volunteers will sell Summer
Raffle tickets to support the work at the Village.
“Our
summer schedule is packed with a Victorian Strawberry Festival, Summer Raffle,
Half-Day Histories, classes, speakers and more—and that’s just here at the
Village,” Jen Peters added. “Take that summer vacation, but when you get home
check out all the great things at the Village and in the Troy community.”
Onsite
parking is limited, but guests can walk, bike, or grab a free shuttle from the
Troy Community Center courtesy of Troy R.Y.D.E. Shuttle parking is in the
Community Center’s south lot. Registration for the event is not required, but visitors
can sign up for more information at www.troyhistoricvillage.org/programs/troy-summer-kick-off/.
