Laredo, TX (July 23, 2018) On a daily basis, the South Texas Food Bank staff prepares and handles background operations of our food bank programs. Staff and volunteers package food for programs such as the Adopt a Family, Kids Café and Commodity Supplemental Food Program, in efforts to help the neediest. The continued demand for these programs and the development of new food bank programs such as the mobile food pantry, increases the demand for volunteer engagement.

The food bank was excited to welcome the Laredo Theater Guild International to our facility as they came on a mission to help. Volunteers from the organization were amped up and ready to assist with the food bank’s operations. It was a great opportunity for them to learn the logistics of the food bank and to actually see how their involvement would play a significant role in families’ lives.

Chibbi Orduña, lead actor of Laredo Theater Guild International’s play “In The Heights,” shared his experience. “It was amazing to see how much work there is to be done at the food bank. Very eye opening! We thought that since our current play focuses on the community and community involvement, what are we doing to give back to the community? We have actors from the Laredo area, volunteers from San Antonio, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and Nuevo Laredo, coming together not only to provide

“flavor” in the form of arts to our community, but we also wanted to give back by volunteering our time to the local food bank.”

Alma Boubel, executive director of the food bank, stated, “It was very rewarding to see volunteers from different regions coming in and giving back to the community. The help is very much needed and highly appreciated, not only by the food bank but by the community as well! I encourage others to do the same!”

About the South Texas Food Bank

The South Texas Food Bank is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to alleviate hunger in the eight-county service area in the south Texas area by collecting and distributing food through partner agencies and programs while creating awareness and educating the community on the realities of hunger.
