Position Description
The Washington County Library Board of Trustees is seeking a visionary creative Director  for a suburban two Branch Library system. The ideal candidate will provide leadership and  guidance by delivering innovative services to the community and by equipping staff with the  tools and support to meet the library needs of these rapidly growing communities.

Historic Jonesborough is home to the International Storytelling Center and is the oldest  town in Tennessee. The Gray Branch is slightly north near major highways and businesses  adjacent to Johnson City, one of the fastest growing communities in the United States.  Eastern Tennessee State University and Ballad Health are major employers. There are ample  recreational and outdoor opportunities in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of East  Tennessee.

The Branches serve a population of approximately 139,000 people. A successful Director  will oversee a budget over $1 million, with direct supervision of Branch Managers and  systemwide staff, and indirect supervision of 15 full and part time staff. The Gray Branch is in  the midst of an exciting move that will double the facility square footage. Jonesborough  Branch has approximate annual numbers of a door count of 40,930 and a circulation of 96,970  items. Gray Branch’s approximate annual visitor count is 32,070 with a circulation of 68,500.   The Director is expected to be an integral part of the communities, and to represent the  Library System in social settings and with a wide range of stakeholders. The Director reports  to a supportive and involved Washington County Library Board of Trustees.

Salary/Status: $65,000-$80,000 with Washington County employee benefits;  exempt full time.

Requirements

Position Requirements
Education: A Masters Degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA accredited program OR the equivalent combination of education and experience, AND 5 years of administrative work in a library or the public sector. Certification from the State of Tennessee Public Library Management Institute (PMLI) or commitment to enroll may replace or supplement education/experience requirements. Experience with grant writing is a plus.

Physical: The ability to sit or stand for a prolonged period of time and perform repetitive movements. The position includes a need to to push and pull loaded book trucks, lift 25 pound book crates, and bend, stoop, reach and climb.

Licensure: Valid driver’s license

• Possess appropriate staff management and supervision skills
• Ability to work effectively with a wide range of community representatives, including patrons, volunteers, Library Board and Washington County Board.
• Develop cost effective budgets, oversee expenditures and account for funds.
• Able to analyze and present statistical and financial data.
• Understand and appreciate functional technology with an ability to implement
• Proficient in the use of applicable computer technology and software programs.
• Develop long range plans and goals in conjunction with the Library Board of Trustees.
• Commit to remain up to date on all required continuing education.
