Heritage Christmas

The Doss Heritage and Culture Center is hosting its Heritage Christmas on Saturday, December 9 from noon to 7 p.m.  This annual event is free to the public and held at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center and in its Pioneer Cabin Park at the rear of the museum.  The Texas history museum is located at 1400 Texas Drive in Weatherford, TX.

This year’s celebration is also the kickoff to the Doss’ newest exhibit held in conjunction with the Quilters Guild of Parker County called Quilts - Piecing Together Past and Present.  The exhibit will showcase quilts from the late 1800s through today and will have specialty quilts on display that have a special focus on Parker County.  The exhibit will be on view through February 24th, 2018.  “One of the quilts has the Parker County Courthouse in the center with other historic properties around the edges, while another is a t-shirt quilt made of Peach Festival shirts from year’s past.  It’s a great show and if you appreciate and love quilts, you won’t want to miss it,” said Amanda Edwards, Curator at the Doss.  Other activities on December 9 will be workshops and demonstrations by members of the Quilters Guild covering topics like:

=        Piecing by machine – Noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

=        Piecing by hand – Noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m.

=        English Paper Piecing – 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

=        Making Yo Yos – Hourly from noon to 6 p.m.

=        Hand quilting – Hourly from 1 to 4 p.m.

=        Laying a quilt for quilting – Hourly from noon to 6 p.m.

=        Binding – Hourly from noon to 2 p.m.

=        Restoration – Hourly from noon to 2 p.m.

=        Celtic applique – 1 and 2 p.m.

=        Mock Mola – 3 p.m.

Along with the above mentioned quilting demonstrations by Guild members the Guild will be selling raffle tickets throughout the day.  The Guild will be drawing the winner of its quilt raffle whose funds benefit many different Parker County non-profit groups including Meals on Wheels, CASA and the Center of Hope.

Cowboy Santa will be stopping by the Doss for photographs and can be found in the McDonald Cabin at the rear of the museum between 1pm and 4pm weather permitting.  “Bring your camera and get a shot of your children and Santa in an authentic Parker County cabin,” said Dean Hungate, Managing Director of the Doss.  The cabin, the first of five to be a part of Pioneer Cabin Park will also be available for touring weather permitting.  If the weather is inclement, Cowboy Santa will relocate inside the museum.

“The Doss is one of the stops on the annual Candlelight Tour of Homes, however, a ticket is not necessary to join in the Heritage Christmas fun,” said Marketing and Events Manager Lorraine Crutcher.  “There’s plenty to see and do for the whole family,” she continued.

The mission of the James and Dorothy Doss Heritage and Culture Center is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Parker County through cultural and educational events that raise awareness and pride in our western heritage.  For more information, contact the museum at (817) 599-6168.  It is located at 1400 Texas Drive in Weatherford.  For information on event spaces, exhibits or programs, visit the website at www.dosscenter.org.
