Kati Hockstad, a mathematics teacher at Manchester Valley High School, is the December 2019 recipient of the Maryland Society of Educational Technology (MSET) Digital Learning Showcase recognition. MSET hosts this monthly showcase to highlight an educator who utilizes technology in a classroom or school.

For several years, Hockstad has pioneered a completely different teaching paradigm in Carroll County – the flipped classroom. The flipped classroom model has students learn concepts at home, instead of within the school walls, and then reinforce the learning at school.  She accomplishes this with her use of technology.

Hockstad has developed a repertoire of video resources and websites linked to a document that she provides to her students for their at-home learning, which then allows her more in-class time to work with students on enriching their understanding of those topics.  She also has completed entire projects with her class working in Desmos, an online graphing site, Desmos.  The learning experience she provides for her students is exceptional and one that prepares them for college and careers.
