Westminster High School Student Wins Sons of the American Revolution State Awards

Westminster High School sophomore Allison Lord was declared the state winner of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Rumbaugh Orations Program during the Annual Meeting of the Maryland Society SAR in Frederick on Aril 13, 2019.  She was named the Westminster Chapter SAR winner at its meeting in March. 

Allison is involved in many school and extra-curricular activities, including mock trial lawyer, theater, Speech and Debate, Student Government, National History Day, Westminster Kazoo Band, Philosophy Club, and Classic Movie Club.  She is a Girl Scout serving on the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Board of Directors and is involved in Central Carroll Soccer. Allison is a Community Media Center producer, Girls on the Run coach, and Carroll Arts Theatre Camp counselor.  She plans on a future in television production or law, specifically criminal/trial/prosecution. 

The Rumbaugh Oration Contest is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors who perform an original oration about an event, person, or ideal associated with the American Revolution.  Allison will compete in the national SAR contest against state winners from across the country in July 2019 in Costa Mesa, California.

In related news, at the same state meeting, Allison received an award for tying for third place in the SAR’s Knight Essay Contest at the state level. This contest is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors at public, private and home schools who write an essay about an event, person or ideal associated with the American Revolution or the U.S. Constitution.


About the SAR

Membership in the SAR is open to men who can demonstrate that their ancestor provided active service in the cause of American independence either by serving in the military or in some other significant role.  Founded in 1889, the goals of the SAR include promoting patriotism, and building respect for American history and the founding fathers.  Across the United States, with over 20,000 members in over 450 local chapters, the SAR also supports veterans in VA hospitals, the Boy Scouts, teachers of American history and ROTC and JROTC units.  The SAR also presents awards and scholarships to elementary, middle, and high school students in who win contests on patriotic topics. sar.org
