Honoring Veterans: Healing Through Horses
La Porte, IN
05/23/2024 06:09 PM

La Porte, IN - May 23, 2024: On this Memorial Day, Anam Cara Counseling pays tribute to the brave men and women who have selflessly served our nation. We honor their sacrifice and renew our commitment to aiding veterans and their families.

Anam Cara is dedicated to providing vital support to veterans, active military personnel, reservists, and their families. Our initiatives aim to help service members transition successfully to civilian life while fostering connections within their communities. The Heroes Club, for instance, offers a monthly gathering led by a fellow veteran, providing a relaxed space for camaraderie and recreational activities, including interaction with horses. Complementing this, our military culturally competent therapy addresses the unique challenges faced by veterans, military service members and their families, offering both individual and group sessions. Further enhancing our commitment to veteran welfare, our Director serves as the elected chairperson of the Northern Indiana Veterans Suicide Prevention Coalition, playing a pivotal role in regional efforts to prevent veteran suicides.

To showcase the profound impact of programs like ours, read the story below of Jared, a veteran on a journey to inner peace with the help of a special horse. Support our mental health initiatives for veterans like Jared by donating to Anam Cara via this link and sharing our video on social media.

“Breathe" - A Story of Transformation

"At Anam Cara, our primary goal is to create a supportive community for veterans/military to connect with other veterans/military. Through initiatives like the Heroes Club, we offer a welcoming environment where veterans can connect with their comrades and families. Our military culturally competent therapy addresses the unique challenges of military life. Joining the Seen Through Horses Campaign allows us to expand our reach and enhance the well-being of more veterans by highlighting the transformative impact of equine-assisted therapy.  It provides unique therapeutic experiences that traditional talk-therapy methods often can't match. The bond between veterans and horses fosters trust, reduces anxiety, and helps process experiences in a safe and non-judgmental environment. This type of therapy taps into the healing power of the human-animal connection, offering veterans and service members a sense of peace and grounding that is crucial for overall well-being."" - Stacey Garcelon, LMHCA, NCC,  Director Anam Cara

About Anam Cara Counseling

Anam Cara, a La Porte-based nonprofit, specializes in healing emotional wounds within the community. It offers unique therapy options including Trauma-Focused Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), where horses are invited into the therapeutic process.  All engagement is conducted from the ground, emphasizing connection and choice, with no riding or horse experience required. By partnering with horses, clients experience transformative healing through experiential therapy. This approach, facilitated by a licensed mental health professional, Equine Specialist, and a herd of horses, leverages the innate ability of horses to co-regulate with humans, promoting deep healing. Anam Cara's holistic approach incorporates sensory experiences and movement, tapping into the nervous systems of both humans and horses to foster healing from the ground up. Research demonstrates the profound impact of equine therapy in facilitating co-regulation, essential for emotional self-regulation and healing from attachment wounds. In addition to equine therapy, Anam Cara provides traditional mental health counseling services, offering evidence-based treatment modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Somatic Experiencing, the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, and more.
