Responsibilities include, but are not limited to receiving, forwarding and handling all emergency calls for all fire departments, rescue, EMS Services, and Police Departments received in the Wicomico County 911 Center for the residents of Wicomico County as well as various surrounding counties who are serviced by these Wicomico County agencies, as well as dispatch and track calls for Fire & EMS.  Works in cooperation with the Communications Operator II in the absence of an immediate supervisor.  Answers to the communications supervisor on duty.

911 Specialist I (911 Call Taker and Dispatcher- 24 hour shift)

Qualifications

Ability to communicate in an articulate fashion by telephone and person to person; Ability to receive information, retain information and transfer information, often during intense, stressful situations; Ability to speak clearly and articulate information over communications radio; Ability to utilize good spelling, grammar and sentence structure; Ability to become familiar with communications computer systems in order to enter as well as retrieve information from files; Ability to multi-task; Ability to type at a reasonable speed and accuracy; Work well as a member of a team with a high level of communication; Ability to develop an excellent working knowledge of Wicomico County geography and landmarks; Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision; Ability to perform related tasks as assigned by higher authority; Ability to work a 24/72 Hour shift rotation that includes nights, weekends and holidays. Subject to call back with little notice. Ability to obtain a passing score on the department issued CritiCall call taking test.

 

Special Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Working knowledge of, and experience using, Microsoft Word, Excel and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Successful completion of the Emergency Telecommunicator (ETC), Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) and Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) training courses.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terms and fire department procedures preferred.
  • Maintain either Emergency Medical Technician, First Aid certification to include CPR and AED or higher medical certification.
  • Attain ICS 100, 200 & 700 certification.
  • The hiring process includes an oral interview, practical exams, background investigation and drug testing.
