Sunday, May 17 at 1 p.m.
BIRMINGHAM, Mich., May 7, 2015 – Strike up the band and let the marching begin… the annual Birmingham Hometown Parade is coming to town. The treasured kick-off to summer will take place Sunday, May 17 at 1 p.m. Bands, fire trucks, clowns, veterans, school groups and more will participate in this year’s event. The City cordially invites community members to become a part of this special event.
In recognition of the 50th anniversary
of the Vietnam War, a
banner will be carried in the parade honoring the thirteen Birmingham Vietnam
War veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The honorable
soldiers are: Donald E. Angerman, Peter L. Barili, John H. Boudreau, Roger R.
Chamblis, David T. Judd, John E. Klett, Christopher H. Markey, Dain W.
Milliman, Samuel G. Orlando, David L. Perkett, Terence R. Roach, Jr., Thomas M.
Thatcher and Larry S. Weil. In addition, all veterans from any military service
and their families are invited to participate in the parade to show their
support of these fallen soldiers and also to receive recognition from the
citizens of Birmingham for their own service. Veterans who are unable to walk
in the parade will receive transportation from volunteers who will escort them
in a Jeep.
Children's activities sponsored by the City of Birmingham and the Junior League of Birmingham will be held in Shain Park after the parade, including prizes, strolling parade performers, and food. Children will enjoy jumping on and playing in two bounce houses in the park. Live music will be provided by the Birmingham Concert Band’s Straw Hat Band. Star Trax Entertainment will also provide music and prizes. Shain Park activities begin immediately following the parade and end at 2 p.m.
Brand new this year, New York Life Insurance Company will be in Shain Park following the parade with their Child ID Program. Child IDs are created using the EZ Child ID System, the nation’s most comprehensive digital fingerprinting child identification system. In only three to five minutes, a Child ID card is printed for each parent or guardian free of charge. Child ID cards feature a child’s photo, fingerprints, contact information, and other pertinent data needed by the police in case of an emergency.
